I remember my days in primary school when we came back from vacation  the first topic of discussion was how one spent his or her vacation and what was the most interesting moment of the time. Again other topics that we all looked forward to be discussed where ...  “What is your favorite food and why” or “Who do you like best and Why”.  These topics excited me because it gave us the opportunity to express ourselves through the form of an essay and the best essay according to our teacher was read out to all the class. This process continued through  all my stages in primary school until I entered secondary school. I did not recall in any of such instances when for example,we were asked to write about our favorite food did some one choose meals like konkonte, akpele, ofam, yekeyeke or ebunabunu,(green soup) to name a few even though these meals are mouth watering!!!Guess what,  ninety nine percent of the class chose either jolof rice and chicken stew for the high class families or simply  rice and stew for the middle class families. We were all playing it safe for fear of being laughed at for choosing the “wrong food” That was how important those essays meant to us and the reputation of our families. Essay writing taught me how to unleash the knowledge I had about any subject matter in the form of a structure comprising the head, body and closing with the aim of bringing people to  understand what, how and why you express issues the way you do.  It is a true moment where one can control a subject matter in any way shape or form based on how you present it. Essays can be very interesting based on the subject. Essays based on fiction can be easy to write because the writer is the creator of the subject matter and therefore can lead the reader through a roller coaster with ease.

Text Box:  On the other hand assays based on factual subject maters are much more interesting to read because the writer is confronted with events that have occurred and therefore the structure of the essay and the presentation of the facts enhances the power of the essay.
In 2004 the Bolingrook Mmrantie Kuo organized an awards dinner dance to recognize certain individuals and institutions who have contributed to the development, peace,  success and the promotion of culture in the Ghanaian community in particular and the society as a whole. It was a great success. This year the theme will be to “Unleash  the knowledge in you”and the focus will be shifted to our young ones in school between the ages of 10 to 18yrs.
These young ones will be tasked through an essay writing competition to unleash their knowledge on a topic to be announced later next month. They will be tasked to write and submit their essay within a given period of time.  These essays will be graded and the winner will be announced and presented with an undisclosed amount of cash reward and other incentives to be determined. This is the vision of the Bolingbrook Mmrantie kuo for the year 2005.
The question then arises as to why this theme?
It is the desire of this association to encourage the young ones in school that their efforts are being appreciated not only by their parents but also by the people they see around them every day. The association also want to emphasis that not only do we care about our members, but also we care about every Ghanaian family and that the young ones are the ones who need to be encouraged in any way we can to help them through school. Also we want to make sure that we are teaching the young ones the moral values that we all cherish back home in Ghana to the extent in which we spend money and time in organizing   events like Ghanafest and others.

Text Box: This essay competition will give back to society the feedback that we so much take for granted in our test for success on any project and will enable us to assess our roles as adults who are tasked with providing good quality education and good moral upbringing to these young ones. I feel excited to be part of Mmrantie Kuo and to see through this project.
I know it will not be an easy grading process when it starts but we encourage parents to see to it that their children take advantage of this opputunity to bring out the best in them through this essay competition and to be proud of their children.
The full details of the competition and topic will be outlined in the next edition of this paper and also on our website at www.mmrantiekuo.org. Folks this will truly be a lot of fun and hard work and this will be the time for our young Ghanaian kids in school to  unleash the knowledge in themselves!
